Chapter 28

Jack led the way down the stairs, with Mel following. Chloe was close behind her, and Frankie brought up the rear. They moved around a pile of the dead that pressed against the U-bend in the stairs. They all had to pinch their noses to pass as a stench rose from the heap of decomposing flesh.

They reached a set of double doors at the bottom, absolute darkness on the other side. Mel pressed her face up against it, then pulled back and shook her head before turning to look at the others. She could barely see them, but could make out Chloe clutching Frankie in a death grip.

“We need to turn the torches on down here or we’re risking making too much noise.”

“Ok.” Jack’s voice was close, but she could barely see his face until his torch lit up the space with a soft click. “Better?”

“God, yes.” Chloe pulled out her own torch and clicked it on. “Ooh, Jack, you’re a bit of a hottie. I couldn’t see that much until now. My night vision is terrible, and Frankie always says—”

“Chlo, let’s chat later, alright?” Frankie interjected.

“Oh, yeah, ok. It’s ’cos I’m nervous. I hate this.”

“We know, but it’s gonna be fine.” Jack swung his torch from Chloe’s face to the doors. He pointed it through the small reinforced-glass panel and swung it side to side. His eyes screwed up as he peered through, then he looked back at Mel. “You ready?”

Mel held up her small pointy stick. “Yep.”

Jack frowned. “You want something different? I’ve got a screwdriver and a knife in my bag?”

She shook her head. “No, I’ll stay with this, thanks. Hopefully, there’ll be something better in a few minutes, anyway.”

“Ready?” Jack asked Frankie and Chloe.

“Ready,” answered Frankie as Chloe nodded her head, not looking at all ready.

Jack pushed on the double doors and they swung inwards, sending out a low creak. Mel held one side and Jack held the other for Frankie and Chloe behind them. Elsa trotted on through silently, making Mel feel a little easier. No growling, no zombies.

Mel rested her door closed, then took in the vast corridor in front of them. It was only two doors wide, but was much longer than she had expected. The torch beam illuminated several doors on both sides as it moved farther down the hall, then dissipated to darkness.

Chloe held out her torch beam for Frankie to move ahead first. Elsa caught up to her and walked at the front of the pack, sniffing the air and moving next to Frankie. Frankie faced Jack and Mel. “Why don’t you two check the rooms on the left and we’ll do the right?”

Mel nodded. “I’ll have the torch, Jack, then you’ve got free hands for fighting.” She took the torch out of Jack’s hand before he answered, but knowing full well he wouldn’t object.

They crept along the light-coloured flooring with their feet making no sound except the odd squeak from the wetness of their soles. Mel and Jack moved to the first door.
